A modified therapeutic community, proving integrated mental health and substance abuse treatment for homeless persons with co-occurring addictive and serious mental disorders.
HARBOR HOUSE pioneered the treatment of homeless dually diagnosed persons within a modified therapeutic community. An integrated team of mental health and substance abuse professionals provide psychiatric assessment, medication therapy, life skills, family counseling, education, vocational training, work experience, HIV/AIDS prevention and support, and aftercare to 59 men and women. A 5-year federally-funded study found that Harbor House produces better outcomes than comparison groups and is particularly successful in reducing symptoms of depression and psychosis and improving self-esteem.
HARBOR HOUSE offers the hope for recovery and self-sufficiency to male and female mentally ill chemical abusers who are homeless. With the assistance of trained psychiatrists, registered psychiatric nurses, and a licensed clinical social worker, Harbor House offers individualized treatment tailored to different diagnoses and varying levels of functioning with the goal of enhancing their quality of life. Many Harbor House residents have been discharged back into the community self-sufficient and functioning. Aftercare is provided by The Argus Prometheus Continuing Day Treatment Program.
